How Forks Has Changed

Isn't it amazing how small the world has become because of these books? I live not far from Forks and have cousins who live there. Years ago (40 about), I was a long distance operator in Seattle, and placing phone calls to Forks was one of my jobs. It wasn't an easy call, because at that time not everyone in town had phones. We had to do what was called a ring down. We called the central line and announced who the call was for. If that person had a phone, it was put through. If not, a message was taken and the person would have to call back. A lot has changed since then. Our family often went to LaPush to go surfing, because that's one of the things my dad was into. He was friends with the Quileute chief, which gave us access to beaches that only tribal members could go to. One of the reasons I started reading these books was because they took place in Forks. I was even pleased to see my own town Sequim mentioned in Breaking Dawn. It's really kick when our Twilight is front page news of our local newspaper. I've saved them all for my scrapbook. If you get a chance to go to Forks for Bella's birthday, I recommend it. It was a lot of fun last year.

The changing face of Forks because of "Twilight"

By Marcia Bingham
For Peninsula Daily News
Forks was settled in the early 1900s because of its proximity to the Sol Duc, Quillayute, Bogachiel and Calawah Rivers.

It was incorporated in 1945 and, at that time, farming was the primary means of earning a living.

For years it was famous as a “timber town.”

But it took a family of unrelated vampires to put Forks’ name firmly into the public eye and draw visitors by the thousands to this temperate rain forest.

Twilight — a dream by a young woman, Stephenie Meyer, which became a best-selling four-book series (and then a movie, with a sequel being filmed and plans for future films) — has changed the face of Forks and thrown open the doors to international visitors.

As anyone on the North Olympic Peninsula will attest, swarms of excited, eager
Twilight fans of all ages come to Forks to experience something magical.

Forks is working hard to retain that mystical aura.

While Twilight opened the floodgates to a fan base ranging from preteen to “oughta know better,” both male and female, the challenge has become keeping the interest high on the West End —  and, from all accounts, Forks is rising to the challenge.

Visitors can pick up a colorful map of the action sites in the book and go off on a self-guided tour, hoping to catch sight of the occasional vampire (on a cloudy day) or a werewolf (non-seasonal).

Their fantasy is fed by the Chamber of Commerce-run Visitor Information Center, where mail for the vampire Cullen family is being saved and where props for exciting photos are treasured and shared.

Directions to other activities and information on Olympic National Park, the former big draw, are offered as well.

Residents are showing a tolerant, slightly amused face to visitors and often recognize the plight of their photo-happy visitors and offer to snap a picture of a group of tourists.

Their indulgence is being paid off with return visits and acknowledgement that this part of the county is both beautiful and quite unique.

Many visitors have sworn they will return to savor the incredible beauty and friendliness of the Pacific Northwest — and some have already relocated their families to be nearer here.

Keeping the experience exciting may not always be possible, but in these first years of the Twilight saga, everyone seems anxious to hold onto the dream as long as possible.

New stores have opened in Forks, new products have been created to fill the seemingly endless demand for booty — and jobs are being offered when it was feared summer work was a thing of the past.

Our gratitude is extended to Stephenie Meyer, who recognized a romance-hungry market which has eagerly devoured her fiction and asked for seconds.

While she hints at the supernatural and teases the reader with her story of endless love, the value of her writings is in the relationships she describes and the settings in which they take place.

Forks is grateful to be the cloudy, mysterious and soggy site for Bella, Edward and Jacob to establish their bonds and immortalize Clallam County.

With four books in the series, it’s hoped more movies will result and the flow of fans will continue.

Pattinson and Stewart deny relationship...again

Robert Pattinson (L) and Kristen Stewart (R) arrive to attend a photocall for the Catherine Hardwicke's film "Twilight" on December 8, 2008 at the Crillon Hotel in Paris, France.

Just when we thought most of the Twilight community had accepted, albeit grudgingly, that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were just friends, Ted Casablanca had to stir everything up again. The E! News columnist reported Wednesday that the young Twilight costars were seen walking hand-in-hand in Vancouver.

"The costars were grocery shopping over the weekend when a fellow shopper noticed the duo ‘holding hands’ as they walked around inside," Casablanca wrote.

No sooner has Casablanca posted the report than the air was filled with the deafening screams of millions of ecstatic Twilight fans. Which puts us in the awkward position of, once again, dashing the hopes of countless young people.

So, once more: no, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are not dating. Pattinson even had to give an exclusive interview to Entertainment Tonight to quash the new rumours.

"It becomes a joke," Pattinson said of the reports. "There was some magazine the other day about me and Kristen, and when you look at it and realize it's on the front of a magazine... You realize that people are actually reading that even though how ridiculous it is. It's really bizarre."

Stewart is reportedly still with boyfriend Michael Angarano, despite pressure from fans to hook up with her dreamy costar.

"It doesn't make my relationship harder. It's not like, 'Maybe I should be with [Rob] to make them happy and it'll make me more popular!’" the 19-year-old actress told USA Today in March. "But, dude, it sucks."

And poor Pattinson revealed that the intense media focus makes him too terrified to start a relationship with anyone.

"I'm always really worried about ruining their lives," he said. "Especially with people that aren't famous. It's such a massive change. I'm kind of a paranoid wreck."

British actor Robert Pattinson, who currently is filming the “Twilight” sequel “New Moon,” has been tapped to play another romantic movie role, MTV.com reported this week.

Pattinson, 22, will play the male lead in “Remember Me,” a film about a young couple whose relationship is tested by a series of family tragedies. The female lead hasn’t been chosen yet.

“Remember Me” is another project for Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the “Twilight” movies based on Stephenie Meyer’s very popular book series.

Twilight The Movie Boardgame

Breaking Dawn Movie

Did anyone else hear that?

In an interview on the Red Carpet last Sunday, Robert Pattinson accidentally let it slip that they will indeed be looking forward to filming not only New Moon and Eclipse, the beloved second and third books in theTwilight Series by Stephenie Meyer, but we should also expect to see Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final book in the series on the big screen as well!Fans must be thrilled. Fears that the series would not be completed on the silver screen were abounding. Rumors that the beloved character of Renesmee, a (spoiler) half-human half-vampire product of the (spoiler again) honeymoon rapture that was Bella and Edward Cullen’s first few weeks of marriage (not to mention the grueling half-a-book with Bell writhing in near-death pain), was too difficult to cast, and that special effects would not be able to adequately assist the director in producing the baby will a full set of teeth, the brain of a twenty-year-old and the voice of an angel.

Does Rob’s slip mean that these are no longer obstacles to Breaking Dawn breaking through the big screen? Let’s hope so.
